Mark Simpson

Mark Simpson has qualifications in education and training, has spent over twenty years living and working in the Pilbara and has worked in training since 1982.

In the mid-1980s Mark wrote the curriculum and established the Environmental Health Worker training program in the Pilbara, Kimberley and mid-west Gascoyne regions. Mark has managed the Ashburton Campuses of West Pilbara College of TAFE, and established and ran the onsite offices of Pundulmurra College. Mark was foundation managing director of Pundulmurra College when it was established as an independent college under a board of predominately Aboriginal people in 1993. Most recently Mark was Training Manager at Rio Tinto Iron Ore with responsibility for all training, apprentices and trainees, education, and Aboriginal employment. Mark also managed of the award winning Aboriginal Training and Liaison (ATAL) team at Rio Tinto. Mark has served on numerous Boards including Tourism WA, Skills Formation Taskforce, Pilbara TAFE, Pindan College, and the Australian Apprenticeship Taskforce.

Since becoming a Director of KBC, Mark has undertaken a large number of consulting projects on behalf of a range of oil and gas companies, mining companies, government departments and Aboriginal corporations. These projects have included:

• consulting with Aboriginal communities;
• developing Indigenous employment strategies;
• working with Aboriginal corporations to improve their management, administrative and government capacity;
• developing strategic plans;
• reviewing efficiency and effectiveness employment and training arrangements at large resource companies; and
• evaluating social investments on behalf of resource companies.
